Year 8 Higher Science Pupils Visit Hull University

Year 8 Higher Science Pupils Visit Hull University

On Wednesday 1 April Mr Matthews and Miss White accompanied 50 Year 8 pupils on a visit to the Department of Chemistry, University of Hull for a Molecular Models workshop.

The pupils have all chosen Higher Science as one of their GCSE options and the trip was designed to introduce them to elements of the course they will begin studying from September onwards.

Their first task was to build molecules from a picture provided using modelling kits supplied by the University.  Molecules such as ethanol, aspirin and some simple sugars were made.  More complex molecules were made by those who found these easy.  Dr Welham from the University then logged everyone onto the computer network and a programme was used that allows molecules to be modelled on screen and new molecules o be designed.

As always our pupils were an absolute credit to the school and Dr Welham commented that he was amazed at how good they were at the tasks he set them.  Better than many undergraduates in his opinion!  We hope this is the first of many trips to the University for our Higher Science Cohorts in all year groups.
